Ample Energy Services have installed many types of buffer stores for heating, hot water and swimming pool and heat transfer in the ground to be recovered for the winter . This is the best way to use a solar thermal system by storing as much energy from the SUN as possible into buffer tanks - the more you store the more you save. When it comes to sizing systems you have to account ‘how many collectors can I have?’ and this depends on budget and size of roofing area, a minimum collector area required for 800Litre buffer store is 15 Sqm—this is the same for evacuated tube collector.

Most good buffer tanks will have between 100 to 150mm insulation jacket to keep the heat within the tank. Temperature losses are 5˚C in 24hours.

How does a buffer store work?
It tries to eliminate a back up heating source and the buffer becomes our boiler, so any heat that we require will come from our buffer store. The store has 8 x 40mm tapping, starting with the top two parts being our hot water, and also heating radiators as these can reach temperatures of about 75˚C. The second two can be used for under floor heating as temperatures are about 44˚C, third two can be for return heat from hot water and the last two are the return from heating source.

On the solar side you must fit a stratified charging module which layers the water in the buffer store. This has an intelligent solar controller unit that monitors the systems putting solar hot water where it needs it the most, maximum store temperature of 85˚C. If collector temperture reaches 130˚C the stratifide charging unit will switch on again to try to cool down the collectors and rise the buffer tank to 95˚C. After that the system goes into stagnation mode and nothing happens at all until the collectors have cooled down or any water drawn off of the buffer store. No water ever leaves the tank, only for heating, when it comes to hot water this is taken from the tank over a stainless steel plate heat exchanger, which works in the same way as a combi boiler but without the need for gas or oil and can deliver 35 Litre per min of instantaneous hot water. A second return pump can be fitted to the unit with a built in time clock.
